Cancer is a horrific disease. Aside from being deadly, it causes pain and fatigue in its victims. Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can be more painful and debilitating than the cancer itself. There are natural therapies that can assist patients in managing the pain and suffering of cancer and cancer treatments.

Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine practitioners use over 3000 herbs and 300 mineral and animal extracts as natural remedies. They combine them in teas, syrups, powders, and pills to treat various illnesses, including cancer and cancer pain. There are studies that show that some of those compounds are successful in treating pain and side effects.


Homeopathy espouses the idea that “like cures like.” Practitioners of homeopathic medicine believe that a small amount of a substance that causes symptoms of a disease in a healthy person will actually relieve those same symptoms in a sick person. There is evidence that homeopathic therapy can lessen the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy as well as improve general well-being and reduce pain.


Hydrotherapy is the use of water as a natural remedy for cancer suffering. The water can be in the form of cool vapor, warm steam, liquid, or ice. Drinking water or taking a warm bath are considered hydrotherapy, but other methods include hot tubs, ice packs, massaging water jets, and saunas. Colon hydrotherapy purports to cleanse the bowels and help cure cancer. In addition, water is sometimes used to cool or heat the body to constrict or dilate blood vessels and achieve pain relief and inflammation.

Another natural remedy for the side effects of cancer is through nutrition therapy. Mangosteen is a fruit that contains an antioxidant called a xanthone, that helps reduce inflammation, pain and fever. Additionally, Vitamin C has been used to treat cancer patients, some of whom have shown improvement in appetite, energy, and pain relief, even being able to reduce their dependency on narcotic pain relief. Juicing can also help the patient to increase their intake of nutrients and plants that have shown to reduce the negative side effects of cancer and cancer treatments.

Laser Therapy

Low intensity lasers can be used as a natural remedy for cancer suffering by focusing on areas that are in pain and gently stimulating them to reduce pain and inflammation and heal wounded tissue. Laser therapy is new and is still being explored as a treatment for cancer pain.

For some patients the pain relief is immediate but fleeting, and for others, pain will go away for a long period of time.
